Category: Media Release, Weekly Updates

The minibus taxi industry is the backbone of South Africa’s public transportation system, serving millions of commuters daily, However, the industry faces challenges that require meaningful interventions to ensure its sustainability and efficiency. To remain sustainable and competitive, it’s essential for the industry to adapt to the changing economy, formalize
operations and leverage technology.

Recent developments highlight the shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) and digitization, aiming to modernize the industry. The introduction of electric vehicles is gaining momentum, this shift towards EVs is expected to reduce emissions, lower operating costs, and improve the overall quality of service, Studies have shown that electric minibus taxis(e-MBTs) are not only feasible but also beneficial for operators with great potential savings on fuel costs.

The National Taxi Alliance has noted several challenges and disadvantages associated with the Electronic Minibus Taxis. The initial investment required to purchase an Electric Minibus taxi are much higher than that of the tradition diesel- and petrol-powered taxis. This is a barrier to entry for many taxi operators. Load shading challenges and charging infrastructure and range are some of the notable challenges, particularly on long distance taxi operations. Addressing these challenges may require more investment in the infrastructure, battery technologies, and providing training and support for operators.

Digitization and Electronic Fare Collection Systems

Digitizing the minibus taxi industry and implementing electronic fare collection systems will bring numerous benefits to operators, drivers and passengers, notably, increased efficiency, improved safety, enhanced revenue management, better customer experience, data driven researched operations, and reduced costs.

E-Hailing Services.

Ride -hailing services like Uber and Bolt are reshaping the transportation landscape in South Africa. These platforms purportedly offer innovative solutions to address challenges like safety and accessibility.

However E hailing services has brought significant challenges to the minibus taxi industry, which include unfair competition, disrupting traditional taxi services, violence and conflict, lower fares as opposed to market related fares, safety concerns, because anyone who owns a car can offer the service and regulatory challenges and exploitation of local drivers by overseas platforms.

To mitigate the challenges, we need modal integration, collaboration and fostering dialogue between stakeholders, government, industry players and driver representatives.

Cooperation and Collaboration with Corporate Partners

The National Taxi Alliance values and appreciate the partnership it has developed with corporate and is always inviting corporate in South Africa and abroad to be instrumental in driving positive change and promoting economic empowerment within the taxi industry. We are always inviting and continue to invite our corporate partners to assist with Capacity Building initiatives Mentorship programmes, Empowerment Opportunities, funding and investments intiatives, NTA brand visibility and Supply Chain development.

The National Taxi Alliance is committed to fostering strong relations with corporate partners and commuters. By engaging in open communication and collaboration.
